In December 2018, sisters Jaqi and Nikki Thompson were working for the federal government of the United States, Jaqi as an analyst for the U.S. Department of Justice and Nikki in the recruitment office for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Both were furloughed, along with approximately 800,000 other federal employees and contractors, in what would become the longest government shutdown to date.
