Erin Samueli may have been the only student at her arts-focused California high school who wanted to be a teacher. She loved singing and performing, but unlike her classmates, she didn’t want to sing professionally. She wasn’t passionate enough about it, not the way you need to be to be successful and fulfilled in a career like that. Instead, from the time she was 15, Samueli had “this tunnel-vision focus”—she was going to teach middle school science.
