WIE From Around the World – WIE’s Impactful Engagements in 2023: In-person annual meeting of the WIE Committee

June 4, 2024 by Celia Shahnaz

The IEEE Women in Engineering (WIE) Committee held its annual in-person meeting (hybrid mode) 5–6 May 2023 in Atlanta, GA, USA, after two years. This meeting was historic, as for the first time it was in conjunction with the 2023 IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges Summit and IEEE Honors Ceremony. The meeting was chaired by WIE Committee Chair Celia Shahnaz and comprised presentations from IEEE President and CEO Saifur Rahman, IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) Vice President John Verboncoeur, IEEE Executive Director Sophia A. Muirhead, IEEE Treasurer Mary Ellen Randall, IEEE Member and Geographic Activities (MGA) Board Vice President Jill Gostin, IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) Vice President Rabab Ward, IEEE Standards Association President Yu Yuan, and chairs of more than 14 different IEEE OUs and committees. There were reports from five WIE Regional coordinators, seven IEEE Society liaisons to WIE, IEEE WIE Magazine , IEEE WIE Forum USA East and WIE International Leadership Conference (ILC). The WIE ILC way forward is more engagement and partnership with IEEE WIE Forum USA East and IEEE WIE Magazine , and collaboration initiatives between WIE and other organizational units, such as the TAB, EAB, IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu, IEEE Humanitarian Technologies Board, IEEE MOVE, IEEE Foundation, IEEE Standards Association, IEEE Smart Village, IEEE REACH, IEEE Future Directions Committee, IEEE New Initiative Committee, IEEE Entrepreneurship Committee, and MGA Training Committee. The WIE’s annual meeting was mentioned by the vice president TA in the TA Spotlight June issue in his midway Progress report, where he emphasized and encouraged Societies and Councils to work with the TAB Committee on Diversity and Inclusion and the WIE to come up with ways to recognize achievements in diversity and inclusion in their events and activities ( https://technical-community-spotlight.ieee.org/a-message-from-the-2023-technical-activities-vice-president-2/ ).

Last summer, as 21-year-old Madelyn Flickinger and her fellow panelists prepared to share their experiences as transplant recipients, donors, and caregivers at the American Transplant Congress, they wondered whether medical professionals would take the time to sit in on a patient-led panel. By the time the presentation started, though, there were nearly a hundred people in the audience. Every seat was taken. People lined the back walls.
